Should the Arizona Newspapers Association post a trust.txt file?
If you want your members to be seen by the platforms and advertisers to be more trustworthy by virtue of their membership, then yes.
(Learn more on this site by looking at our FAQs, or this page for associations.)
Have other associations done this?
Yes, and more are getting posted all the time. Here’s one that is similar to what your file might look like.
And here is how the top and bottom of the file appear:
Why are social accounts included?
This is mostly for publishers. It gives the platforms a way to know what the real social media channels are, preventing malicious actors from creating social media accounts in the name of a local media brand. Right now the platforms have no way to tell which accounts are official. With this file, they will, and your members’ brands—and the entire network of local publishers—will be that much safer from attacks.
What would our trust.txt file look like?
Something like this:
#this is the trust.txt file for the Arizona Newspapers Association
Note that this is not the official file, and was created as an example from public information.
How do we actually post the file?
It looks like your site is built with:
With WordPress, there is a plugin available. It will take you less than five minutes to install the plugin and paste your trust.txt file into your site.
How much does it cost?
If you want to post your own trust.txt file, everything you need is on this site. It is all free.
If you like, you can also choose to become a member of JournalList, a member-owned not-for-profit. The form to do that is at the bottom of this page. Joining gets you listed on our master trust.txt file, and we will help you get your file set up. Also, you will be a member, and will be doing your part to help support the trust.txt framework.
If you still have questions, just set a time to talk to Scott Yates and he will be happy to walk you through what you need to do to begin helping your members increase their trust and visibility online.
Or if you are ready to join now, you can do so right here. Once you join we will contact you to help you set up your file, and include you on the JournalList master file.
Based on our information, your association is either a small or medium. You can pick which you think is best for you, there is no difference in your status in the JournalList master file, or in your status as a voting member of this nonprofit cooperative.

Bottom line: Why should we do this?
If you are publishing good work, you want your work to be noticed. To do that, you need to make it possible for the web crawlers and algorithms used by platforms, social networks and advertisers to understand who you are. They make decisions with data. The fact that your members belong to you—a trustworthy organization—is important, and it is data. If your members have social channels they control, that’s data. But right now that data is invisible to the platforms. This will take data about the trustworthiness of you and your members, and make it visible.
